A Look at Little Golden Books

Little Golden Books were first published by Simon and Schuster in 1942, and have gone on to become the most popular series of childrens literature around. Originally there were twelve titles:

The Little Red Hen Three Little Kittens This Little Piggy and Other Counting Rhymes Bedtime Stories Nursery Songs The Animals of Farmer Jones Mother Goose The Alphabet from A to Z The Golden Book of Fairy Tales Prayers for Children The Pokey Little Puppy Babys Book of Objects

These books were originally sold in department stories and bookstores for the price of 25. They had sold approximately 1.5 million copies and were into their third printing within five months of their original release.

Over a billion and a half of these books were sold as of 1992, the golden anniversary of the books. The distinctive appearance of these books has remained the same over the last 60 years, even though some of the details are now different. A new copy of The Pokey Little Puppy would look very much like an original copy from 1942.

New titles have been added to the series which include some favorite childrens characters such as the Muppets and Power Rangers. Popular icons that have appeared in Little Golden Books over the last 60 years include Captain Kangaroo, Mister Rogers, and Rin Tin Tin. Many old titles are still in print all these years later.
